City of Hull Band

Solo BARITONE:

Dan Zobkiw

Dan is from Hull and started playing the baritone at St Charles Primary School, where he was fortunate enough to be taught by Bob Childs and throughout his time at St Mary’s College. At this time, he also benefitted from the playing in Hull Music Service Ensembles.

Dan studied music at 6th form college where his baritone studies continued under the guidance of Dixon Laing.   At the age of 14 Dan joined the Cottingham band and enjoyed their journey from the lower sections through to the Championship section - highlights included a visit to the Royal Albert Hall and the Symphony Hall, at national finals, and then went on to become a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. The band’s performance of Holst’s Planets for brass band, directed by James Watson, was a particularly enjoyable experience, and only the second time this arrangement had been performed in its entirety.

Dan studied music at the University of Hull and switched to the Euphonium to perform the Wilby Euphonium Concerto, accompanied by the Cottingham Band. At University, he was taught by the City of Hull Band’s Solo Euphonium player, Melanie Ornsby.

Following a break, to concentrate on work commitments, Dan resumed playing again in January 2023 and is looking forward to performing Philip Wilby’s Red Priest at the Northern Areas.
