A selection of comments from Facebook after the band took part in the service to commemorate 50 Years since the sinking of the Trawler 'The Gaul':

Thankyou for the beautiful music you all played on Sunday at the holy trinity service for the Gaul memorial 50 years … Anchor for the soul and For those in peril on the sea really gave me a tear in my eye coming from a fishing family I have strong memories of the loss of the ships from Hull but wow what respect you paid with the beautiful music I have never heard a band live and it resonated around the trinity I will never forget it …. Xx please thank the full band for me

Beautiful! Thank you to Mel & Russ . Thank you to all our lovely friends who are the City of Hull Band .

"I think the one thing anyone who writes music hopes for is that once it’s released into the world, the music takes on a life of its own, transcends itself and goes on to become something more than just dots on paper.

The way all of you in the band, and the people of Hull have all taken the music to heart and made it part of your commemorations, and your collective consciousness of these events is just amazing, and I’m so glad it was good enough that you all decide it should be so.

That music’s not mine any more. It’s yours. All of you in the band, all of the people the trawler community & the city of Hull herself. And that’s absolutely the best thing that could have happened to it, because now it has a life of its own.

Thankyou for making that happen. "

Andi Cook [composer of Anchor for the Soul]

Thank you Andi for your most inspirational composition. Your 'dots on the page' are the tears for so many who hear 'Anchor for the Soul' - who feel it in their hearts. Your composition has become a poignant anthem for all those lost trawlermen we remember at our Lost Trawlermen's Day Service every year but also at special Services such as the opening of the Memorial on St Andrews Quay & the 50th anniversary of the loss of the Gaul yesterday.

Music is so powerful & we feel so privileged to always welcome our lovely & most talented friends, the City of Hull Band through whom such a great piece can be communicated. Thank you to Mel & Russ for your beautiful & moving playing & to the whole band who always play 'Anchor for the Soul' as if it is the first time - with such meaning & soul.

Thank you, Andi

To Tony and the band:

This is the card I didn`t want to make for goodness’ sake.

A year of “happenings” I didn`t want to share, but I`ll go there.

This was the year I lost my hero! Cancer 1, Clive zero.

His life was built on success, kids doing well, as far as I can tell.

We`d drive the Triumph, travel a bit, find a patch of sun and sit in it.

Now there`s a pretty meadow not accessible by car, that`s where his ashes are.

His friends sent him off at a pub we liked, but maybe my drink was spiked

`cos I danced round my crutch while the City of Hull band played and we stayed.

To laugh and sing with Chris Ody and Ann our friend, not to fix hearts but to start to mend.

If you`ve a minute, you might send best wishes to Clive at his good life`s end.

I hope this Christmas finds you well and happy and for many years to come.

Affectionately

Maggie

Just read the latest news, what a tremendous effort to play at Blackpool.  Was originally disappointed when we first saw the results without knowing the problems, but 13th place now seems absolutely fantastic.  See you in Beverley.

On a bitterly cold night we truly enjoyed the excellent City of Hull brass band and all the soloists in the Christmas concert at the Hull Minster. It was with sadness as it was the last time that MD Stig Maersk conducted the band before he returns to his homeland, Denmark. We wish him well in his new venture and will always remember him for his cheerfulness and expertise in rehearsing and leading the band to its very high standard up there with the best.

Fantastic show yesterday. The soloists were extra special. Perfect way to light my Christmas fuse and get it burning. Thank you soooo much for visiting Beverley and can't wait to see you again 🎼🎼🎼😊🎼🎼🎼

Came along to Beverley Parkway Cinema this afternoon with my girls and we had a fabulous afternoon, first time for my girls seeing all the instruments and they really enjoyed it. They recognised the majority of the songs too. We'll be keeping an eye out for more concerts in the new year!

My hubby and I attended your concert at Parkway Beverley and thoroughly enjoyed every minute especially, in my case, the trombone trio! Such smooth tones from all the Band.

A credit to Stig whom we are sorry is leaving as MD but we wish him and his family a blessed future back in their homeland.

A very merry Christmas to all. Xx

Very pleased to see Neil Day back in “his” chair. Of course sincere condolences from us for the loss of his son to Covid. We are sure being with band member friends will help. Also welcome to the new players filling the vacant chairs. Looking forward to seeing and hearing you in Beverley Parkway.

From all of us at STAND, we wish to say 'Thank You Very Much'.

Thank you for sharing in our special day, through your music, and helping to create such a beautiful atmosphere in the service.  Anchor for the Soul will always be a special piece of music, and once again brought tears to many eyes.  You are an exceptional band!

Wishing you all every success and good health too.  With kind regards,
