FLUGEL HORN:

Fiona Staples

Fiona began her banding life at the age of 10 learning the cornet under the tutelage of Linda Nicholson (from whom she would receive tuition for 8 years) on what we would refer to as “the dark side of the Pennines”. Fiona was soon attending The St Helens Youth Brass Band where she played for 11 years whilst in full time education occupying several cornet seats including Principal Cornet and also played Flugel horn. She was also playing in local bands which included Haydock Band and Pemberton Old DW, competing in many contests including both the Flemish and Scottish Opens. Leaving school Fiona attended Salford University gaining a 2:1 BA (Hons) in music.

In 2010 she moved to Barton on Humber and began playing for Barton Town Band staying for 12 years as it morphed into Barton Community Band being an active committee member and a tutor for Barton Youth Band. Over this period Fiona became the bands flugel horn player. In 2022 having helped out City of Hull Band on cornet at several contests the opportunity to join them full time on flugel horn arose and after much soul searching, she decided to join.

Fiona remains a Youth Band tutor for Barton Youth Band and a committee member at Barton Community Band for whom she offers brass lessons and a weekly youth / training band practise. Fiona is looking forward to the challenges ahead.
