City of Hull Band

MUSICAL DIRECTOR:

Dean Jones:

Dean has made Yorkshire his home ever since studying at The University of Huddersfield for an MMus in music performance in 2011. Originally from Wiltshire, Dean grew up in a family of brass banders and was a product of the Swindon Pegasus Youth Band. His first taste of championship brass banding as a trombone player was with Aldbourne where he played until moving to Yorkshire to study.

Dean's playing career took him to bands such as Rothwell, Leyland, Carlton Main Frickley and perhaps most notably Grimethorpe Colliery.

Dean began conducting in 2012 with a short stint at Besses o'th' Barn Band before finding his feet with Crofton Silver Band. Taking over the band in 2013 when they were in the third section, Dean guided Crofton to 3 promotions, 8 contest wins including Third Section National Champions. The band played in the Championship Section Yorkshire Areas for the first time in their 150 year history with Dean at the helm in 2020.

When brass banding returned post lockdowns, the opportunity arose to take up the baton at City of Hull Band. Having worked with the band on occasions Dean was keen to build on the brilliant history and success of such an enthusiastic and driven band of musicians.

2023 saw the band gain a solid 4th place at the Regional contest and a well fought 13th place after a COVID stricken build up to the Grand Shield.

Dean loves to put on entertaining programmes that marry the classic brass band repertoire with some new works for band that are equally as toe tapping and enjoyable.

Come and see for yourself at the bands next concert!
