City of Hull Band

PRINCIPAL CORNET:

Keir Luc

I started playing rather late in the Rotherham schools’ band. First starting on Trumpet in their

concert band before joining their Jazz and brass band. My first competition in "Adult Brass

Banding" as Principal, at the age of 13 was with Dronfield and Lowedges Community Band, in

Ireland Colliery’s Battle of the brass bands. My First area’s competition in the fourth section was

with Loxley Silver Band in 2015, I went on to win Youngest Player in the Yorkshire Area's

Championship Section contest with Strata Brass the following year. I have played with some of

Yorkshire's most prestigious bands, I have competed at the Championship level with Rothwell

Temperance under Dave Roberts and Hammonds band with Morgan Griffiths. My successes

are winning at Preston with Hatfield band under Stanley Lippeat and the Grand Shield with

Hammonds Band under the baton of Morgan Griffiths, Followed by an appearance at the British

Open.

I met Richard Marshal at a Black Dyke band workshop at The Henry Fanshaw School

organised by the Dronfield Band and Mark Walters. Afterwards Black Dyke band did a concert at

the Dronfield Leisure Centre, The players at the workshop were invited to play alongside.

Richard and Nick Childs invited me to The Yorkshire Youth Brass band so they could have a

better look at me, that’s where my association with Yorkshire Youth Brass Band Started. I was

put onto Principal Cornet which I held for 5 years. After joining YYBB I began to have lessons

under the amazing Richard Marshall which continued into my University time. I joined the

National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain on the Solo Cornet Bench, a seat I held for 8

courses. I was also a member of the Youth Brass 2000 Band under the baton of Chris Jeans,

where I was the principal flugel horn competing in the European, Nationals, and Youth Open

Championships.

Once beginning my studies in Leicester for my BSc in Biomedical Science, I initially spent my

time with the GUS band. I went to the Area with the Kibworth Band as Principal cornet, Before

joining the Ratby Senior Band on Principal Cornet. A seat I held from the beginning of 2020 to

the end of 2023, having a successful 4 years attending The Royal Albert Hall on 3 occasions for

the National Brass band Championships of Great Britain, achieving a memorable 5th place in

2021. I became a member of The Nottinghamshire Band of The Royal Engineers on Assistant

Principal Trumpet on moving to Leicester, most noticeably playing Solo principal trumpet for

Princess Anne’s attendance at a military parade meeting her afterwards. More recently 2023 I

had the honour of playing the Last post at The Cenotaph London in support of the Royal Tank

Regiment and the Metropolitan Police.

After relocating back to Sheffield and gaining a new job in

the NHS' St James Hospital Leeds, I now have been given the wonderful opportunity to play

principal cornet for the City of Hull Band in their upcoming competitions. A challenge I am

thoroughly looking forward to.
